Review of ASOPLEJICA in a 1991 newspaper

ASOPLEJICA began its activities on the second floor of the rehabilitation area of the Dr. Teodoro Maldonado Carbo Hospital in the years 1977-1978; the idea of creating an institution that brings together those with mobility limitations came from Mr. Xavier Miranda (+). In the beginning, the club that had been created informally was named by its members A.M.A.R.S.S. 2 (Association of disabled affiliated regional 2), due to the fact that almost all of its members were part of the Ecuadorian Social Security Institute (IESS).

In later conversations (August 14, 1981) it was decided to form the association of “Hemiplegics, paraplegics, quadriplegics and amputees from Guayas” (Asoplejica). In addition, the motto “dignity on wheels” was adopted. The first president of the institution was the engineer, Leopoldo Falquez. The members of ASOPLEJICA initially met in private homes, or in the social security hospital. Later, in 1988 they moved to the offices where they are located up to this day.

Initially, the idea of forming the association was to group all people with reduced mobility, regardless of their origin. However, as of 2004, Asoplejica was the beneficiary of an agreement with the Municipality of Guayaquil, and began to take in girls, boys and adolescents with disabilities of all kinds. Other objectives of the entity since its foundation were:

  • Psychologically support its members by promoting actions to improve self-esteem and image.
  • Promote actions in favor of its members for greater development of their activities and reintegration into society as apt, productive and useful citizens.
  • Strengthen full participation in society and solidary respect for people with disabilities
  • Ensure compliance with the provisions of the laws in favor of this group of people.
  • Encourage cultural, social, recreational and sports exchange relations with similar or related national and foreign groups, societies or associations.
  • Develop and provide basic therapeutic services, aimed at improving the sensory and physical conditions of people with disabilities.
ASOPLEJICA in a parade of the municipality

Asoplejica is a non-profit organization, which is sustained thanks to the contribution of its partners (1 dollar a month); currently it is made up of around 200 members who have different disabilities (mainly physical). The Municipality of Guayaquil also provides a fixed annual amount, in order to provide therapies to 30 children and adolescents up to 18 years of age.

In our association, rehabilitation services are offered aimed at improving the quality of life of the members; In addition to the usual therapies, it tries to help in the learning of skills that facilitate independent work in those with disabilities. This program currently covers those who belonged to the municipality’s program, but who, due to their age, no longer have coverage. Mothers, representatives of children with disabilities, also receive workshops that help them work at home.
